Every summer, shorts, tanks, and sandals allow us to show some skin after months of being buried under layers of clothing. All of a sudden, our bodies begin to interact with our surroundings in a more exposed way, which is why body care in the summer is especially important.
There's no better time of year to be active, enjoy fresh food, and soak up some much-needed, life-giving sunshine. But our skin requires extra TLC in the heat and sun of summer months. If you're looking for ways to take care of your whole body this summer, including your skin, here are a few of our favorite all-natural tips.
Hydrate. The absolute best way to keep your body feeling good and your skin looking healthy is to drink lots of water. Good hydration can dramatically improve your athletic performance, and it's essential to replenish your body's water supply if you're sweating in the heat. Remember that eating fresh produce is an excellent source of water too, so incorporate seasonal fruits and vegetables in your diet as much as possible. Stay active and flexible. Leave your phone and laptop behind this summer. Instead, embrace the outdoors—your body (and your mind) will thank you. Go for walks, runs, hikes, and swims. The more you keep your body moving, the healthier it will be. At the same time, try to incorporate some stretching or yoga to keep your muscles limber and pain-free.
Take care of your skin. To really care for your skin, you have to think about it before, during, and after any activity. Protect your skin before leaving the house by applying a natural sunblock everyday, remembering to cover all of your exposed skin (not just your face). Also, try to wear light fabrics that wick away sweat to prevent chafing. During the day, reapply sunscreen regularly and stay hydrated. Then, at night, soothe any dry or sunburned areas with an all-natural, soothing salve that will help your skin heal itself quickly.
This summer, be thoughtful about what you put in and on your body. Having a healthy, strong body comes down to many small but important choices every day. The more you prioritize your internal and external wellbeing, the more you'll be able to fully enjoy everything your summer has in store.
