The Efficacy of Arnica - How Wildcrafting and Infusing This Bright Plant Makes It More Potent

Arnica - The Pain Relief Herbalist's Dream Of By Jen Scott, Green Goo's Master Herbalist I was first exposed to Arnica while working on an organic farm in California. It grew on the north facing steep slopes of certain mountain ranges. It fast because one of my favorite herbs because of its beautiful yellow flower. Yellow is my favorite color! As well, it grows in the mountains, where I love to hike and explore. So I felt that Arnica and I, well, we liked each other. Really, what makes me love this plant the most is that it's so healing in times of pain, whether physical pain or emotional trauma. It's an important herb to have in your first aid kit! We use...

The Glampeur's Guide to Taking Care of Your Skin This Winter!

Have you ever had skin so dry it hurts? Dry skin is a perennial pain, especially when you're spending your winter free time frolicking in the snowy woods, or just walking the dog around the neighborhood. Brrrr. But luckily combating the dryness is as simple as developing a healthy hydration routine. Painful dry skin is most common in winter, which means now is a perfect time to fine tune your hydration routine. With winter on its way, the air’s humidity level drops and everything gets a little drier--including your skin. With lower humidity, water evaporates more quickly. Hydrate Your Skin If you want to avoid dry skin, one of the simplest methods is to hydrate your skin externally. This is...

Hurricane Harvey - Note From the State of Texas

We just received this awesome message from Taylor Wolter, Disaster Services Program Officer for the OneStar Foundation, in regards to a donation we made. In early September, we shipped over 8000 deodorant, first aid, and baby products (almost $60,000) to Rock Port Fire Department for Harvey victims. We wished we could do more, but we hope this made a difference during their hard times. Two of the owners of our company used to live in Texas, so we have a soft spot for the state. Keep shining bright H-town! Dear Green Goo, Thank you for your generosity and support of Hurricane Harvey survivors. Your offer exemplifies the way in which we come together to support one another during our time of greatest need. Record setting devastation in Texas was met...

The Dirtiest Pedicure—Foot Care Tips For Runners and Hikers

“Never trust a man with pretty feet.” Photos & text by Morgan Sjogren I looked down at Michael's toes, which I thought could not possibly ever get any worse for the wear after years of mountain running and rock climbing, and yet he just accomplished the unthinkable. If you don’t have any toenails to begin with, how much more damage can be done? In two weeks of running that spanned hundreds of miles (including racing a 100K ultra marathon), bagging 22 peaks, and crawling through rugged desert canyons he managed to rough up the stubby fungus ridden nail nubs even more, crack open the calluses on the bottoms of his feet, and worst of all, somehow get a thorn logged inside...

You CAN Keep Bugs Away Without Harsh Chemicals

When you buy a can of bug spray off the shelf, chances are, it contains a chemical known as DEET. This chemical (whose full name is N, N-Diethyl-meta-toluamide) is the active ingredient in most insect repellents on the market today, and it works by making it difficult for mosquitos and other insects to smell us. It’s very effective, and until recently, it has effectively been our only choice. There is compelling evidence that direct exposure to this chemical isn’t good for our health, and many people (including the team here at Green Goo) are skeptical about putting any strong chemicals directly on the skin. Though DEET is still an FDA-approved ingredient, several studies have found a correlation between exposure to DEET...

Rubbing Dirt In My Wounds

How A Runner’s First Ultramarathon Led To Stepping Up Her First Aid Kit Photos and text by professional runner Mo Sjogren. Check out her Instagram page. I ate it. Hard. After finishing my first ever ultramarathon in 2nd place, a 55K that climbed up a 12,000 foot mountain, the only thing that everyone kept asking me about was the blood streaking down my legs. Running side by side and flying downhill at mile 18 with the woman who eventually won the entire race, my toe clipped a rock and I fell face against the dirt before I even knew what happened. My legs were instantly chewed up like hamburger meat, bloody and swollen. When I ran past the next aid...
